With an increasing number of films adapted from popular online novels, online literature and intellectual properties have turned out to be a new force and inspiration for the Chinese cinema.
Yesterday domestic writers and film industry insiders told a forum of the 18th Shanghai International Film Festival that it is a good phenomenon for movies to find new inspiration and stories from the online novels, but improper use of them may also bring about awful and superficial productions.
At the forum titled “Internet Literature, Scriptwriting and New Talents”, famous film maker Li Shaohong said that Internet novels have added some new film genres to Chinese cinema such as fantasy stories.
“Compared with traditional film scriptwriting, online novels are usually more illusionary and imaginative,” said Li. “It will also pose new challenges on Chinese filmmakers to present really impelling works.”
Chen Cun, chairman of Shanghai Writers\' Association, said that the domestic movie industry needs to improve its cinematography technology and production skills to put fantasy stories, a popular part of online novels onto the screen.
In addition to fantasy story, urban love story is also a well-received subject of film adaptation. Popular movies “So Young” and “The Left Ear” are both based on online romance novels.
Insiders anticipate that more and more crossover talents will dabble in film creation and production. A lot of Internet writers are also ready for film and TV scriptwriting with special training.
Cheng Wu, vice president of Tencent said that it is a trend that the boundary of filmmaking is blurring. Filmmaking will interact with many other entertainments on the Internet such as online games and novels.
This year Tencent will also include film scriptwriting into its annual Next Idea competition to discover young film talents and stories in China.
