The Asian New Talent Award jury members shared thoughts and ideas about Asian cinema and their hopes for identifying and encouraging young filmmakers at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival yesterday.
This year\'s jury is chaired by Chinese film director and writer Lu Chuan. It includes Indian film critic Aruna Vasudev, Korean director and writer Choi Dong-hoon, US producer Gary Kurtz, and French actress Laura Weissbecker.
Lu Chuan is one of the top young filmmakers in China. His 2004 film Kekexili: Mountain Patrol won him a Golden Rooster and a Golden Horse Best Film award plus the special jury prize at the 17th Tokyo International Film Festival.
"It\'s a great honor to be a jury member of this year\'s Asian New Talent Award and to work with excellent filmmakers from different countries," Lu said. "Our mission is to select the best young directors and their films and give them more opportunities in their future careers."
Vasudev, founder and president of NETPAC, emphasized the importance for Asians to pay attention to films from other Asian countries and areas."Cinema is the most important cultural carrier in the world," Vasudev said, "and through it we get to know each other\'s culture and way of thinking."
"We are making great films in Asia and I think it\'s a great pity that we are not seeing more of each other\'s films," she said."I think the Asian New Talent Award in Shanghai is very important and I just hope the films in competition here will also get a chance to be released in theaters or on television."
Kurtz is an award winning producer of many films including American Graffiti, Star Wars, Two-Lane Blacktop and The Dark Crystal. He shared his thoughts about judging a competition of Asian films as a western filmmaker.
"I think good films are universal anywhere in the world," Kurtz said. "There are certain cultural differences in what the audience wants but, from a filmmaker\'s perspective, if it\'s a good story with interesting characters well told, it can work for any audience."
"So my appreciation of Chinese films is based on the interesting of storytelling and characters. I always look forward to seeing new films from different cultures around the world."
A total of 10 films are competing this year for three awards: Best Director, Best Picture and Jury Prix. The award ceremony will be held on Friday, June 21st.
