Feature screenings of five IMAX-version movies kicked off the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival\'s IMAX Films Panorama yesterday at Peace Cinema.
The films, being shown at four local IMAX cinemas, include Ang Lee\'s Life of Pi, the second and third instalments of the Transformers film series, Inception and Top Gun.
Chen Jiande, CEO of IMAX China, told the Panorama\'s opening ceremony that IMAX established the Peace Cinema 14 years ago, the first of its type in Shanghai. He said 105 commercial IMAX theaters are now operating in China and there are expected to be 150 by end of this year.
"Chinese cinema is undergoing rapid growth," said Chen. "However, its development can\'t just rely on the technologies of film screening and production. We hope a few more outstanding Chinese films will emerge."
Yu Dong, CEO and Founder of Bona Film Group, said he expects this year\'s national box office gross sales will exceed 20 billion yuan (US$3.3 billion) and technology will be an important force in the industry."We still need to learn from Hollywood about its film production technologies to increase the international competitiveness of home-grown movies," Yu said.
Meanwhile, Shanghai Film Museum which opens to the public today also held a grand opening party yesterday. The four-storey museum in Xujiahui area features exhibition halls covering 15,000 square meters, an art cinema, and film workshops that offer visitors simulated experiences of being a film director, an actor or a cameraman.
The museum holds more than 3,000 items representing the achievements and lives of celebrated Chinese film figures such as director Wu Yigong, singer and film actress Zhou Xuan and actor Zhao Dan.
These items include film scripts, posters, props, costumes, photographs and animation sketches. Some film artists have also donated their own books, letters, paintings and cameras.
