More than 400 international and local film celebrities walked down the red carpet outside the Shanghai Culture Square last night to raise the curtain on the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.
Among them were American film maker Oliver Stone, Hong Kong China actor Chow Yun-fat, South Korean heartthrob Zo In-sung, Italian actress and producer Maria Cucinotta and Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming.
Hong Kong China actor Andy Lau and director Johnnie To attended to promote their new crime thriller Blind Detective. Lau portrays a visually impaired detective in the movie and said it was one of his most difficult roles. On the red carpet he performed several of the character’s dance gestures.
The event also attracted singer Jay Chou who came to promote his self-directed martial-arts musical film The Rooftop.
During the opening ceremony, Oliver Stone received a lifetime achievement award. He recalled his first visit to the city 21 years ago as a jury member for the 1st Shanghai International Film Festival.
He was thrilled that a lot of his movies will be shown during this festival, including Alexander and JFK.
"It is a beautiful film festival," he said. "East and West meets here. I like East meets West."
Hong Kong China martial arts film director Tsui Hark was presented with an award for outstanding contribution to Chinese cinema.
"Shanghai is the cradle of Chinese film," Tsui said. "This award means so much to me."
British director Tom Hooper, Jury President for the Golden Goblet award, expressed his gratitude for being given the honor of the role.
"Chinese cinema is undergoing an extraordinary evolution," Hooper said. "Film festivals, where many voices are heard and many films have the chance to find an audience, play a crucial role.
“I\'m so proud that the festival chose to screen my latest film Les Miserables,” he said.
Monsters University, a new 3D animated comedy produced by Pixar Studios, was the festival\'s opening film.
