The refurbished version of Cross Roads was made possible by a collaboration started last year between Shanghai International Film Festival and the classic luxury watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre to restore old classic films.
A year later, three films have been completed-Cross Roads, The River Flows to the East and Eight Thousand Li of Cloud and Moon-and all will be shown in their restored glory at this year\'s festival.
The screening of Cross Roads was celebrated with an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1930s when it was first released. About 200 women wearing cheongsams participated in the opening ceremony which featured large old posters, newsboys and rickshaws.
The film is set in the 1930s and tells the story of four college graduates. Zhao Qing, daughter of actor Zhao Dan, and Jiang Xiaosong, son of actress Bai Yang, joined the audience in remembering the older generation of film artists.
The restoration project began soon after last year\'s film festival. Work on The River Flows to the East was undertaken to coincide with the 100th anniversary of director Zheng Junli. The other two films for restoration were decided as a result of suggestions from the public.
The China Film Archive restored The River Flows to the East while Italian company Laser S. Films worked on Cross Roads and Eight Thousand Li of Cloud and Moon.
Since the start of ticket sales on June 9, the three films have received lots of attention and some screening sessions have been sold out.
