As a traditional warm-up activity for the Shanghai International Film Festival, the Panorama of French Film will stop by Shanghai this spring. This year’s Panorama, presented by uniFrance Films in cooperation with the French Embassy in China, and undertaken by Shanghai International Film Festival, features 9 feature-length and 10 short recent French films, as well as the classic A Trip to the Moon by the film magician George Méliès. From April 14th to 17th, a delegation of French professionals and artists will visit Shanghai to meet French cinema lovers.
The annual Panorama of French Film is dedicated to promoting the cream of French cinematic culture and the French spirit of freedom and romance. The host of this year’s session selected films from various genres, such as comedy, action, literary, animation, and thriller. Among them, My Worst Nightmare, starring Isabelle Huppert, one of the greatest French comedians, tells the story of two characters of distinct social identities but inevitably intertwined by fate. War is Declared, a film that has won several awards and represented France at the Oscars, is bound to earn many Chinese tears and laughter at the same time with its unique love story. Tahar Rahim, Best New Talent and Best Actor at the 2010 Caesars Awards (for his acting in A Prophet), as well as a leading actor in a French film by Chinese director Lou Ye, will make his debut on Chinese screens in The Free Men. The film is a French version of Schindler’s List and took part in the Cannes Film Festival last year. In addition, Chinese film lovers will get to enjoy the latest films by major French actresses such as Julie Depardieu (The Art of Love) and Audrey Tautou (Headwinds). They will also have the chance to taste authentic French humor in The Fairy, a hit film at Cannes 2011.
In particular, this Panorama will honor one of the greatest masterpieces of French cinema, A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès in 1902. A colorized version of this film opened the Cannes Film Festival 2011. This year, it will be screened in Shanghai along with A Happy Event, on the opening day of April 14. This is the first time the film will be shown on the big screen in China, a full 110 years after its debut in France. The film was restored by three famous restoration companies: Lobster Films, Groupama Gan Foundation for Cinema and Technicolor Foundation for Film Heritage.
This Panorama will be held in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Shenyang. From April 14th to 17th, Shanghai Film Art Center, Cathay Theater and Shanghai UME International Cineplex will screen the films. During that time, a number of directors and actors from the films will meet with fans.
In order to allow Chinese audiences to enjoy the original flavor of the French cinema, all films in the event will be screened in French with Chinese subtitles. Shanghai Film Art Center, Cathay Theater and Shanghai UME International Cineplex will start selling tickets on April 1st. Shanghai East Tickets will also start to sell tickets online for 50 yuan for each.
