Japanese Director Won New Talent Award\'s Best FeatureJapanese director Shoutarou Kobayashi\'s Kaasan Mom\'s Life won Best Feature Film Award in the Asian New Talent Award competition last night at Shanghai International Film Festival."It\'s really unbelievable," said Kobayashi. "Thank you so much."
The heartwarming picture portrays mother-of-two Rieko Saibara who supports her family by drawing cartoons. Her husband Yutaka Kamoshida, a former war photographer, is hospitalized battling alcohol dependency.
The jury was fulsome in its praise of Kaasan Mom\'s Life : "The jury was impressed by the complete ensemble of the performances, the subtle evolution of the story through various moods ranging from black comedy to drama, and the heartwarming treatment of several serious themes."
Best Director Award went to China\'s Teng Yung Shing whose film Return Ticket is the story of a girl who dreams of returning home. Leaving home was her choice, but it was a choice made out of no choices.
Return Ticket was highly praised: "The jury unanimously felt the film was a perfect example of a director\'s movie, with a strong personal signature in its look and mise-en-scene, and control of all the dramatic elements."
Birth Right by Japanese director Naoki Hashimoto won the Jury Prix Award. It\'s the story of an energetic teen, Ayano, who is intercepted on her way to class by an unknown person disguised in a school uniform.
It won the award because "the film\'s rigorous and uncompromising style, and refreshingly new slant on genre conventions, convinced the jury that the filmmaker has a vibrant future".
The purpose of the Asian New Talent Award is to discover and support new Asian filmmakers.
This year\'s international jury included Japanese director Shunji Iwai, UK film critic Derek Elley, Taiwan China actress Guey Lun Mei, Hong Kong China producer Alex Law, and Mainland China actor Xia Yu.
