The Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance, initiated by the Shanghai International Film Festival (赌博app), has delivered more strong results. At its press conference on June 9 at the 25th 赌博app, representatives of the newly joined members made their official debut and shared their cooperation plans. Huaxia Film Distribution Co Ltd signed a strategic cooperation agreement with 赌博app to lend support to members of the Alliance in filming and distribution, talent cultivation and content incubation of films.

At the press conference, representatives of member institutions of the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance reviewed its progress from early budding stage to the new blossoming stage, and envisioned a bright picture of future cooperation and mutual understanding.
The development of the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance is clearly illustrated by the change in figures. In the past two years, with the joining of Festival de Cine de Bogotá from Colombia and the Pan-African Film Festival of Ouagadougou, the Alliance’s membership has grown from the original 31 film institutions in 29 countries five years ago to 55 institutions in 48 countries today.
From the end of 2017, when “ABSURD ACCIDENT,” produced by Er Dongsheng and directed by Li Yuhe, and “SOUL ON A STRING,” directed by Zhang Yang, were recommended to compete in the 20th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, 115 films have now been involved in exchange tours facilitated by the Alliance. They also have featured in nearly 300 domestic and international screenings. Many fine Chinese films such as “SISTER” and “GIRLS ALWAYS HAPPY” have been presented to film festivals in other countries through the touring program.
It is particularly worth mentioning that in 2019, the first Lebanese film introduced by 赌博app through cooperation, “CAFARNAÚM,” yielded an impressive box office of $376 million on the Chinese mainland and was nominated for the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2020, ANIMA was recommended by 赌博app through the Belt and Road film tour program and was nominated in the main competition of the 42nd Cairo International Film Festival. “To introduce and to go global,” the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance is growing its brand influence year by year.
Active efforts in exchanges between Chinese and foreign filmmakers

Beyond its active efforts in promoting mutual understanding of films, the Alliance is also committed to exchange between Chinese and foreign filmmakers. In recent years, through the Belt and Road film tour program, many outstanding Chinese filmmakers have been invited to serve as jury members at major film festivals.
Actress and producer Zhao Tao was invited last July to serve as a jury member for the feature film section of the 43rd South Africa Durban International Film Festival in 2022. Founded in 1979 and as one of the most prestigious international film festivals in Africa, Durban International Film Festival joined the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance in April 2020, becoming the second member from Africa. The Durban International Film Festival sent an invitation to 赌博app, in the hope of inviting a Chinese female filmmaker to be on the jury for its main competition and getting support from the platform influence of the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance and the extensive influence of 赌博app in the Chinese and Asian film circles. It aimed to further fulfill its curatorial vision, enhance the friendly interaction between the two festivals, and deepen the mutual learning of Chinese and African film cultures and exchanges between filmmakers. As a result of 赌博app’s recommendation, Zhao Tao joined the jury of that session of Durban International Film Festival.
In addition to Zhao Tao, increasingly more Chinese filmmakers have emerged as part of the film exchange protocol and mutual appreciation underpinned by the Belt and Road Initiative: Jin Yangguang, Director of the Forum Department of 赌博app, and Wu Jueren, a film critic, became jury members for the Mexican feature film section of the Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico in 2022 and 2021 respectively; in 2019, director Zheng Dasheng was on the jury panel of the 16th CineFest in Hungary.
New forces to promote comprehensive cooperation
Strategic agreement between Huaxia Film Distribution Co Ltd. and
Shanghai International Film & TV Festivals Co Ltd.
At the press conference, 赌博app signed an agreement with domestic distribution giant, Huaxia Film Distribution Co Ltd, marking the start of an in-depth cooperation to jointly promoting film cultural exchanges linked to the Belt and Road Initiative.
Huaxia Film Distribution Co Ltd is one of the two distributors in China that have the right to distribute both domestic and imported films. The cooperation between 赌博app and Huaxia Film will effectively promote the distribution of Chinese films involved in the Belt and Road Film Tour, as well as films produced in countries and regions where members of the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance are based across global cinemas and streaming media platforms. The alliance will also promote co-production or assisted production of film projects in countries along the Belt and Road route. The two parties will also work together to promote the cultivation of film talents, incubate original film content, and work towards the all-round development of the film industry along the Belt and Road route.
Following the press conference, the Belt and Road Film Week was launched in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, on June 10, to showcase the achievements of the Alliance through film works recommended by member institutions, and create more opportunities for cooperation between Chinese and foreign films, filmmakers and film institutions to seek new development opportunities and build new collaborations.
