Film is a world where the reality meets with the imagination. It is unique not only for the stories it tells but also for the ways it tells stories. And the latter constitute an audio-visual expression that gives a glimpse of life, emotions, and inner world, building a close bond between the audience and the characters. The creation of film art is about experience of life and society, bearing an imprint of the imagination and memory of people, life, and nature, and zooming in on people's lives.
This year, the Shanghai International Film Festival (赌博app) has invited well-known film masters at home and abroad to the MasterClass to share the charm of film art with the audience.
The schedule of the MasterClass of the 24th 赌博app is as follows:
Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Master Class: Dialogue with Jia Zhangke
Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thai director, screenwriter, and producer, was born in Bangkok, Thailand in July 1970. As the new generation of Asian film masters, Apichatpong is the winner of many international laurels. His feature film debut “MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON” (2000) established his position in the film industry. His representative works “UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES” (2010) and “TROPICAL MALADY” (2004) won the Palme d'Or and the Jury Prize at the Festival de Cannes. Apichatpong shows a keen interest in exploring the dialectical symbiosis between man and nature, and conveys the aspiration to return to nature in the characters' most ardent desires. His latest work “MEMORIA” (2021) was shot in Colombia, starring Tilda Swinton.
Jia Zhangke, Chinese director, producer and writer. Born in Fenyang, Shanxi Province in 1970, he studied at the Department of Literature of Beijing Film Academy. His major works include “THE WORLD” (2004), “STILL LIFE” (2006), “I WISH I KNEW” (2010), “MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART” (2015), “ASH IS PUREST WHITE” (2018), “SO CLOSE TO MY LAND” (2020), etc.
After Apichatpong expressed his desire to have a dialogue with a Chinese filmmaker, director Jia Zhangke's name immediately come to our minds. As the much talked about Asian filmmakers in contemporary times, the two, born in the same year, share the same source of creation, that is the memory of and reflection on their respective homeland. Also, they have similar emotional experience in the narration and expression of films, and have spared no effort in supporting young filmmakers. In addition, Jia Zhangke has served as the co-producer of Apichatpong's new work “MEMORIA”. During the outbreak of the pandemic, Apichatpong responded to Director Jia's open letter in the first time, showing the precious friendship between the two masters. The dialogue between the two will surely enlighten and inspire young filmmakers who are growing up.
Director Danis Tanovic’s Master Class
Denis Tanovic, director and screenwriter from Bosnia and Herzegovina, was born in February 1969. With his first feature film “NO MAN'S LAND” (2001), he astounded the 54th Festival de Cannes and won the Award for Best Screenplay; his work “AN EPISODE IN THE LIFE OF AN IRON PICKER” (2013) received the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival; “DEATH IN SARAJEVO” (2016) is the winner the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival and the FIPRESCI Critics Award. Tanovic has directed an array of war-themed films, depicting the real life of little men in the havoc of war objectively and delicately. This year, Tanovic's new creations “MEDITERRANEAN DREAMS” and “INVISIBLE” will be screened soon. At the MasterClass, let’s discover Tanovic's film world, and have a taste of the beauty with solemnity of war-themed films.
Donnie Yen’s Master Class
Donnie Yen, martial artist, actor, and director from Hong Kong, China, was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province in July 1963. Representative works include “YIP MAN”, “ KILL ZONE”, “KUNG FU JUNGLE”, etc. He was awarded the Huabiao Awards for Outstanding Overseas Chinese Actor, Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Action Design, Golden Horse Award for Best Action Choreography and other awards. Donnie Yen’s film series “YIP MAN” is hailed as one of the most influential action movies in the past decade, and is praised highly by fans at home and abroad. The martial arts clips he created are superbly ornamental and practical, which bring together the style of various martial art schools and personal features, and influence profoundly the global film world. He was invited to star in “ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY” and “MULAN” and some other Hollywood blockbusters. During the 24th 赌博app this year, Donnie Yen will be invited to the MasterClass and share his life as a martial artist with everyone.
Director Aleksandr Sokurov’s Master Class: Dialogue with Marco Mueller
Aleksandr Sokurov, Russia’s most treasured contemporary director and the major inheritor of Tarkovsky's spirit, was born in Siberia, Russia in June 1951. His first feature film “THE LONELY VOICE OF MAN” (1987) won the Bronze Leopard at the 40th Locarno Film Festival; the 96-minute “RUSSIAN ARK” (2002) was shot consummately without cuts and was nominated for the main competition unit at the 55th Festival de Cannes; “FAUST” (2011) won the Golden Lion Award at the 68th Venice International Film Festival. Sokolov's works usually take on a strong personal style. He pursues the perfection and richness of film language, and is good at expressing philosophical thinking on grand topics such as life, art, and history through unique shooting aesthetics.
Marco Müller, Italian film producer, film critic, and film historian, was born in Rome, Italy in June 1953. Marco Muller started his career in film festival planning in 1978, has served as the chairman of several international film festivals, and has introduced the fine works of many Asian directors to the world. He has directed and written many documentaries about the history of world cinema, published many books under this topic, and has been writing for professional magazines and film media for a long time.
Director Sokurov and Marco Müller are close friends for many years, across the language and region gaps. At the same time, as the producer of the works directed by Sokurov, “MOLOCH” AND “THE SUN”, Marco Müller has been committed to publicizing and promoting Russian and Asian film works over years. Sokurov also said that Marco Müller had influenced him deeply and appreciated Marco Müller’s support to his film art career. In this dialogue, the two filmmakers, talking about art and friendship, will definitely allow the audience to know the beauty of world film art from a different perspective.
Director Abderrahmane Sissako’s Master Class: Dialogue with Pema Tseden
Abderrahmane Sissako, Mauritania director, screenwriter, producer, and actor, was born in October 1961 in the southeastern city of Kiffa in Mauritania. Sissako graduated from the All-Russian State University of Cinematography named after S.A. Gerasimov and settled in France in the 1990s. His rich cross-lingual and cross-cultural experience has nourished the humanity of his works. His representative work “WAITING FOR HAPPINESS” (2002) was shortlisted for the 55th “A Kind of Concern” unit of the 55th Festival de Cannes and won the FIPRESCI Critics Award; “TIMBUKTU” (2014) won the 40th César Award for Best Director and other 7 awards. As one of the most influential filmmakers in Africa, Sissako is known for film works with prose, documentary and humanistic natures.
Pema Tseden, film director, screenwriter, and writer, has published novel collections such as “ENTICEMENT”, “THE SILENT HOLY STONES”, “THARLO”, “JINPA”, “TEETH”, etc. His works, winning a variety of literary awards, have been translated into many languages and published overseas. His main film works include: “THE SILENT HOLY STONES”, “THE SEARCH”, “OLD DOG”, “THE SACRED ARROW”, “THARLO”, “JINPA”, “BALLOON”, etc. His works have won dozens of domestic and foreign awards.
Director Pema Tseden and Director Sissako are the jury members for the Golden Goblet Award at the 19th 赌博app. The two directors have the same 赌博app memories, similar cross-language backgrounds, and a strong homeland complex. Also, there is profound humanistic warmth in their shooting works where poetry and documentary are in harmony. The two directors are also judges for many other film festivals and are committed to discovering and supporting young film talents. The dialogue between the two will create a new spark of thought to boost young filmmakers’ confidence and stimulate their reflections.
